9:10 pm on 29 October 2012

Police are hosting a conference with officers from Australia and Singapore in Wellington this week to discuss the use of tasers.

The four-day conference beginning on Tuesday will look at a number of issues, including the different types of electronic control devices, their medical risks and the importance of monitoring their use.

Speakers include a retired chief constable who helped introduce tasers to police in Britain and a spokesperson for Taser International which makes the weapons.

Police in New Zealand have used the tasers more than 200 times since they were introduced in 2010.

One person has been severely injured and seven moderately.
