Snow is falling on Canterbury's alpine passes, as roads become heavy with drivers returning from the Labour Weekend holiday.

Snow showers have eased in the Arthur's and Lindis passes on Monday, but is settling in the Porter's and Lewis passes further north.

In Lewis Pass, between 3cm and 5cm of snow has settled on the top of the road.

The MetService reports that rain has turned to snow above 200 metres in Porter's Pass and between 10cm and 15cm are expected to settle.

Police say no accidents have been reported.
