Police say the driver of one of the cars linked to a fatal hit and run in Christchurch has come forward.

One man died and another is in hospital after being hit by a car in the suburb of Hornby at 11pm on Saturday.

Officers are looking into reports that two cars were racing before one of them hit the pedestrians standing on the side of Shands Road near Marshs Road.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Murton says the driver of a Suzuki Swift spotted at the scene has come forward.

But he says the police would still like to speak to the driver of a red Toyota Corolla also seen at the crash site.

Mr Murton won't comment on whether alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.

Meanwhile, police are looking for witnesses to another hit and run in Christchurch on Saturday.

The incident occurred at about 3am outside a Burger King restaurant on Moorhouse Avenue.

Officers say a green four-door saloon struck a pedestrian before heading off at speed.

A man in his twenties suffered multiple serious injuries.
