Fine dodgers caught

More than $10 million was recovered from fine dodgers at airports over the past four years.

The Ministry of Justice says 500 people who owe money have been stopped entering and leaving New Zealand since 2008.

More than $600 million is still owing in outstanding fines, but that is down from more than $800 million in 2008.

The ministry says that indicates more people are voluntarily paying overdue fines.

More than $10 million was recovered at airports and shipping ports, mostly from people travelling to or from Australia.

Courts Minister Chester Borrows says it's best that fine dodgers get in touch with the courts before the courts find them.
