North Island iwi Ngati Apa has initialled a deed of settlement with the Crown over its Treaty of Waitangi claim.
Based in the Rangitikei region, the claim relates primarily to the Crown's purchase of a 105,000-hectare block of land in 1849.
It also includes the failure of the Crown to protect about 14,000 hectares of reserves.
The settlement, which is yet to be ratified, includes $16 million and the transfer of a number of sites of cultural significance to Ngati Apa.
