NZ Paralympians head for Beijing

10:16 am on 2 September 2008

The last of the New Zealand Paralympic team have left for Beijing, hoping to secure at least three more medals than the 10 achieved at Athens.

They include athletes Tim Prendergast and Matt Slade, and shooter Michael Johnson who all won gold at the last games in 2004.

Strict selection criteria means this year's team is smaller than at the last Paralympics, with 30 competitors in seven sports including cycling, powerlifting and swimming.

Some 4000 people from 130 countries are expected to compete. The event is from 6 - 17 September.

Wheel Blacks wheelchair rugby team captain Dan Buckingham, says this is the fourth Paralympic Games for many in his team, but the first for some others.

He says that leads to a well-mixed team.
