The Christchurch City Council is to meet with the Anglican Diocese to discuss the possibility of building a cardboard cathedral in Hagley Park.
The existing building in Cathedral Square was badly damaged in the earthquakes in February and June this year and is to be partially demolished.
The cardboard cathedral has been designed by a Japanese architect who is well known for his work with paper and recycled cardboard.
The diocese has asked the council for up to $5 million to build the structure, as well a 2500-square-metre section of Hagley Park to put it in.
It says the temporary structure would fit 700 people and be up for 10 years.
The council on Thursday agreed to meet with the diocese before making a decision on funding.
