A petition signed by more than 300 red zone homeowners has been handed to Prime Minister John Key during his visit to the Canterbury town of Kaiapoi.
Mr Key was met in the town by about 30 people protesting the Government's decision to red zone the nearby suburb of Brooklands, north of Christchurch.
Protest organiser Olly Ohlson says soon after the February 2011 earthquake, Mr Key promised to restore the suburb, and he wants him to keep his word.
Mr Ohlson says it would be about $30 million cheaper for the Government to remediate the land and infrastructure than to buy up the properties as it is doing.
Mr Key was opening Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson's new electorate office in Kaiapoi and would later open the Silverstream subdivision.
