Lyttelton Port puts expansion plans on hold

Christchurch's Lyttelton Port is putting expansion plans on hold while it focuses on repairs to earthquake damaged infrastructure.

Last year the Government fast tracked the use of quake rubble to reclaim 10 hectares of land at Te Awaparahi Bay, east of the port.

The reclamation was to include a $25 million expansion of the port's coal yards.

But the port now says repair work needed to keep it operating has overtaken these plans.

Port chief executive Peter Davie says the company is now looking at alternative ways to handle future growth.

The bill to repair the port is likely to run into hundreds of millions of dollars.
