Hewlett-Packard says it plans to spend $US1 billion and shed 9000 jobs over three years as it creates fully-automated commercial data centres.

The giant technology company says the job cuts will be the result of productivity gains and automation.

The BBC reports the latest job losses come after 6700 posts were shed last year to make savings.
