The NZX 50 index fell 5 points or 0.2% to 3150 during Wednesday morning trading, on turnover of $16 million.
Telecom was unchanged at $2.63, Fletcher Building was down 5 cents at $8.40, while Contact Energy fell down 4 cents to $5.77.
Fisher and Paykel Applicances was unchanged at 69 cents and Air New Zealand fell 1 cent to $1.19
The Warehouse was unchanged at $4.20 as was Pumpkin Patch at $1.90
Sky Television fell 4 cents to $4.64, and Sky City Entertainment was down 3 cents to $3.26
In currency markets the dollar is trading at 71.66 US cents, 82.11 Australian, 44.9 pence, 64.58 yen, and 0.4912 euro. The TWI stood at 65.33.
US stocks down
Stocks on Wall Street slipped on Tuesday after unexpected fall in consumer confidence in September outweighing news of a rise in US housing prices in July.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 47.16 points, or 0.48% to 9,742.20.
The Nasdaq composite dipped 6.70 points, or 0.31%, to 2,124.04.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 2.37 points, or 0.22%, to 1,060.61.
Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index rose 0.9% on Tuesday after sliding 2.5% the previous day to its lowest close since 24 July.
