A modest increase in electronic spending in July has ended six months of flat sales.
Paymark, which processes three-quarters of all electronic transactions, says spending increased 1.1% to $3.5 billion in the month, compared with July last year.
It says spending on footwear and liquor increased the most, while big-ticket items like furniture and appliances fell slightly.
Chief executive Simon Tong says it is too early to predict a trend, and the coming months will show whether consumers are more confident about spending.
