An entire community in Papua New Guinea has been buried alive under a landslide and locals are desperate for help.

It struck at 3am on Thursday (NZT) morning in Yambali Village in Enga Province and only three people have been rescued in the past 10 hours.

Locals are trying to retrieve bodies but require heavy-duty equipment to remove massive rocks and debris and are awaiting government and NGO support.

A nearby resident Mick Michael told RNZ Pacific's Eleisha Foon it's 'catastrophic'.
