5% sales tax proposed for American Samoa

American Samoa is looking at bringing in a 5 percent sales tax to boost the territory's coffers.

The manager of the government tax office Richard Jimmison has told the local Chamber of Commerce his office's proposal will be sent to the legislature in July.

He says a tax on goods and services would bring in about 18 million dollars a year and help move the territory forward.

Mr Jimmison says American Samoa's two percent tax on wages would be eliminated under the proposal.
