Sport: Extreme weather postpones Oceania rugby champs

3:00 pm on 1 May 2015

The opening day of matches in the Oceania Rugby Junior Championship have been postponed until tomorrow due to extreme weather conditions on the Gold Coast.

Heavy rain and gale-force winds above 90 kilometres per hour are expected today, with the decision made in consultation with the Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Samoa teams.

Oceania Rugby Championship Director Wayne Schuster says they are disappointed there will not be any games today but says player welfare must be their top priority.

Australian U20s head coach Adrian Thompson welcomes the decision, which he says was made in the best interest of all players.

The opening fixtures between Japan and New Zealand, and Australia and Samoa, will now kick-off on Saturday local time.
