Boeing 777 aircraft will be able to land at Tonga's Fua'amotu International Airport once the runway has been resurfaced.
Radio Tonga says the project is set to get underway following the signing of a contract between Tonga Airports Limited and the World Bank.
The resurfacing and maintenance project will cost 31 million pa'anga and it will be funded through the World Bank in collaboration with the Tongan government.
The chief executive of Tonga Airport Limited, Viliami Ma'ake, says the resurfacing work is expected to get underway by early next year.
