Inquiry into violence at PNG camp labelled a farce

Australia's Refugee Action Coalition says the inquiry into violence at the Manus Island detention camp in Papua New Guinea has become a farce.

This comes after PNG Police rejected the Australia Government commissioned report into rioting and the killing of asylum seeker, Reza Barati.

The Cornall report put the blame for the violence on the inmates, PNG police and security guards and Manus Island civilians.

PNG Police Deputy Commissioner Simon Kauba, says his staff were not involved and he says the report may be a coverup.

The Coalition's Ian Rintoul says there must be a proper independent inquiry into the violence.

"So we have got reports that are both internally contradictory and certainly which contradict each other. I think that is why we do need a full and independent inquiry that is not beholden to Australian Immigration or the PNG Police."
