A 37-year-old man was badly bitten on the foot by a shark on Christmas Day in northern New Caledonia.
Police say the victim was snorkelling near the beach of Linderalique at Hienghene.
He was reportedly dragged ashore and applied a tourniquet.
The Noumea resident was taken to hospital where he was operated on.
Hienghene authorities banned bathing on the beach, which is near a resort.
