The Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Council has praised the government after news farmers are in line for a record payout.

Fiji's prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says based on figures from the Fiji Sugar Corporation, the pay out so far is a record-breaking 43 US dollars a ton with more to come.

Commodore Bainimarama says it is huge achievement for Fiji, and he says a sign his government's reforms of the sugar industry are paying off.

This is backed up by the acting chairman of the Cane Growers Council, Sundresh Chetty.

"I acknowledge the support of the government and also the industry stake holders working together, that we have managed to get this achievement, particularly the big improvement in our mill performance in the 2012 season. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work that has been put in by the millers, the Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd and also the growers supplying good quality cane to the mills."
