Sport: Samoan softballers target Czech Republic as must-win game

11:44 am on 5 March 2013

Samoa coach Chris Kohlhase says Tuesday's clash with the Czech Republic is a must-win game if they want to keep their World Softball Championship playoff hopes alive.

The Tanifa lost their unbeaten record on Monday in a 4-3 defeat to Venezuela, although they were the first team to score a run against the South Americans.

The Czech Republic won their opening two matches, but were thrashed 7-0 by Venezuela on Sunday and came up short in a 10-7 thriller against the USA.

Chris Kohlhase says, despite those defeats, the Czechs are a good team.

"They've got four or five batters in the middle of their order that they score all their runs through so we're well aware of their capabilities. They will also be aware that a win against us will get them through. We definitely need to win today to cement our place on Friday, or else we will be struggling, so it's an all out win for us today."

Defending champs Australia will open today's line-up of matches in a clash of the unbeaten teams against Venezuela.
