Rain in PNG cuts access to Popondetta

Heavy rain in Papua New Guinea's Northern province has led to major flooding, destroying roads and cutting access to Popondetta town

The provincial police commander, Victor Isouve, has told the newspaper, The National, that two weeks of continuous rain has caused rivers to burst their banks.

Superintendent Isouve says all major rivers in Kokoda such as the Kumusi, Gira, Mamba, Girua and Bara had burst their banks.

He says the road was impassable and all those travelling in and out of Kokoda had to wait for the rivers to subside before they could cross.

The provincial governor, Gary Juffa, says teams have been dispatched to the areas affected.
