The President of the Federated States of Micronesia says without international assistance and cooperation, his country is helpless against the first impacts of climate change.
Emanuel Mori had been addressing the General debate of the 67th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.
He told the Assembly the biggest problem Micronesia continues to face is climate change.
President Mori says his country's very existence depends on the Kyoto protocol, the UN's international framework convention on climate change.
He says sadly to date, no significant progress has been made on climate change mitigation which he believes must be addressed.
"To the rest of the World, the map looks pretty empty on our side of the globe but to all of us it is as much a home land as any continental landmass, we must treat it accordingly and must defend it just as strongly"
President Emanuel Mori says illegal and unregulated fishing is also a major issue for the FSM.
