Stuck French Polynesia trawler to be dismantled

7:09 pm on 20 June 2012

The French Polynesian maritime authorities have decided to dismantle a trawler that ran aground on Pukapuka atoll in the Tuamotus three weeks ago.

This comes after experts found it was too difficult and costly to repair the cracks for the vessel Mata'u to be refloated.

Local television says work will begin in mid-July to pump out 20,000 litres of fuel before the 21-metre trawler is removed.

Its cargo of seven tonnes of fish has been lost.

The last two sailors left the island on a military aircraft a week ago.
