Fiji pushes voter registration message

3:22 pm on 15 June 2012

The Fiji interim government says it will use all mainstream media outlets in its effort to encourage voter registration as it is not compulsory to register or vote.

The elections minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has told Fijivillage that he wants to get all Fijians to understand that it is their right to vote.

He says the objective of the electronic voter registration campaign is to reach as many people as possible within a short period of time.

Registration is expected to be launched in two weeks.

The election has been promised for 2014 to replace the legislature which the regime disbanded as part of the military's 2006 coup.
