Some Fiji schools still needed for flooding victims

4:04 pm on 9 April 2012

The director of Fiji's Disaster Management Office says despite good progress in cleaning up after the recent floods, some schools will not be able to reopen tomorrow as planned.

Pajiliai Dobui says up to 6,000 people were forced to spend last night in evacuation centres, such as schools.

Mr Dobui says the weather has been fine to restore people's living quarters but some schools are likely to still be needed.

"It is likely that a few may have to be used until people can be moved to their homes."

Pajiliai Dobui says there has been extensive assistance, including from civil society, like the Rotary Club and the Red Cross, as well as countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the US.
