Indonesian policeman killed in Papua attack

4:27 pm on 8 February 2012

An Indonesian police officer with the Mobile Brigade was shot dead yesterday while on patrol near the Freeport mine in the highlands of the Papua region.

Police suspect the gunmen are linked to a separatist group.

The Jakarta Post reports the Papua police chief, Inspector General. B. L. Tobing, as saying that police have been deployed to hunt down the group.

The road between Timika to Tembagapura has been shut while police conduct an investigation into the shooting.

Last month, two workers at the Freeport mine were shot dead on the same route.
