Indonesia police arrest 12 suspected Papuan rebels

Police in the Indonesian region of Papua have announced the arrests of 12 people they say are members of the separatist Free Papua Organisation, the OPM.

A police spokesperson says officers successfully arrested 12 people but another suspect was shot dead while trying to escape.

The Jakarta Post reports that police allege the 13 were behind recent attacks on the Mobile Brigade operational command and food security office in Mulia in Puncak Jaya.

The police spokesperson also says security in Papua is being beefed approaching the December the 1st anniversary of Papua's original declaration of independence, fifty years ago.
