Police ensure resumption of New Caledonia mine operation

10:12 am on 3 November 2011

About 100 police officers have been deployed in the north of New Caledonia to enforce a court order to lift a blockade of a mining site.

According to Noumea's daily newspaper, members of the Kaala-Gomen clan had blocked access to the Ouaco mine of the SMSP company last week amid demands that they be given a share of the revenue.

Last week, the company lodged a complaint, saying its freedom to work was being infringed.

Police were deployed in the night to allow work to resume.

The locals have reportedly agreed to let operations run until the weekend.
