Event planners in the Cook Islands are already starting to gear up for the country's 50th anniversary celebrations in 2015.

The Cook Islands gained independence in 1965 and the head of the Culture Ministry, Sonny Williams, says they're starting to build up to what will be the countries biggest celebrations.

He says if Cook Islanders living in other countries wanted to visit, 2015 would be a good time.

"It's going to be a bigger and longer celebration I would say, our 50th. There are people in Australia and New Zealand four years time 2015. That would be a time to be here. That will be our biggest celebration ever."

The nation celebrates 46 years of independence this Thursday.
