Emergencies covered despite PNG doctors' strike

Papua New Guinea's secretary for health says has been assured emergency services have been put in place during an ongoing doctors' strike.

478 members of the Papua New Guinea Doctors' Association have been on strike since Friday over demands for a new agreement to lift doctors' salary gradings and pay them other allowances.

Dr Clement Malau says he is hoping hospital CEO's are managing the situation accordingly.

"We have had indications that people are now seeking private facilities that we have in Port Moresby and possibly Lae. I am terribly worried about the rest of the country. But I have also been assured that the emergency services are being conducted throughout the country."

Dr Clement Malau says he is continually seeking dialogue with the doctors.
