Leadership Tribunal to deliver decision over PNG PM today

12:22 pm on 21 March 2011

The Leadership Tribunal investigating the Papua New Guinea prime minister, Sir Michael Somare's alleged misconduct charges is expected to announce its decision on liability later today.

The three-man panel of foreign judges had been expected to release a decision last week.

But the Post Courier newspaper says they were not ready to give their verdict on the 25-allegations that Sir Michael had failed to complete returns to the Ombudsman Commission.

The paper says it understood that the decision was still being worked on, hence the delay.

If the tribunal recommends Sir Michael is liable to a penalty, it will reconvene and call for submissions on the type of penalty it should apply.
