French Polynesia mayors shun annual Paris meeting

2:34 pm on 12 November 2010

Most of French Polynesia's mayors have decided to boycott this year's annual French mayors' meeting in France.

According to the La Depeche newspaper, members of the organisation for the promotion of communes have agreed to stay away from the four-day meeting in Paris later this month.

They argue that they are faced with financial problems and they note that France is disengaging from the running of the communes.

Only four of the territory's mayors have said they will go to the Paris meeting.
