Tongan PM in Fiji for talks

10:50 am on 28 June 2010

The Tongan Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, is in Fiji for talks with the interim Prime Minster and interim Foreign Minister.

Dr Sevele is chairman of the Forum Ministerial Contact Group, which when it meet in Auckland in the last month, said Fiji's situation had deteriorated over the last year.

That decision angered Fiji's interim Prime Minister, who said the group would not be welcome to visit to check out the situation for themselves.

But Dr Sevele told Radio Australia that it is important to keep the lines of communication open, saying: " We have to make contact and try and move forward, as best as we can."

The Tongan Prime Minister has yet to say whether he will accept an invitation to attend the Melanesian Spearhead Group meeting being held in Fiji next month.

Fiji has invited a number of non MSG members to attend and dubbed the meeting MSG plus.

Fiji will not be attending the Pacific Island Forum in early August as it is still suspended.
