American Samoa judge demands greater police presence in court

3:48 pm on 7 June 2010

American Samoa's chief justice, Michael Kruse, wants more police escorting inmates to their court hearings.

Justice Kruse made the call after he noticed only one officer accompanied seven inmates to the High Court and one officer for four inmates at the District Court.

At one point last Friday six inmates were in the courtroom but no officer.

Justice Kruse called for a recess and told the Court marshall to contact police to immediately to send additional personnel to the High Court.

He's told the government that he would not tolerate this again.
