New Zealand's Foreign Affairs Minister, Murray McCully, says he has held positive talks with his counterpart from Fiji over restoring diplomatic relations.
He met Fiji's Foreign Minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, at talks hosted by Australia's Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith in Canberra.
Murray McCully says they sketched out the issues dividing them and progress will be incremental.
Mr McCully says the talks spilled over into wider areas of disagreement between New Zealand and the military regime, but they were basically about opening lines of communication.
"We've agreed that we will talk again, we've agreed we've got a responsibility to try and work through a process that will result in our missions being able to operate regardless of disagreements we might have and we are still talking."
Murray McCully says the first matter to deal with is having respective heads of mission return to Suva and Wellington.
