The Fiji interim government says as of this week government pensioners who have been speaking out against the current government have had their pension payments stopped.
The interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has told Radio Fiji that a decree to that effect was passed last week.
Commodore Bainimarama said payments to dissenting pensioners were stopped as soon as the decree was promulgated.
It is not known how many pensioners are affected by the cut.
Commodore Bainimarama says it has been his hope that all citizens work together to create a new Fiji, but unfortunately many, including some pensioners, were still speaking out against the government.
He seized power in a military coup in 2006 and since last April, Fiji is under emergency rule, allowing police, military and public servants to stop events they deem to be a threat to the country's security.
