It's believed police checkpoints in Samoa have contributed to a relatively low number of road accidents during the festive season.
Six people died as a result of violence or accidents over the Christmas and New Year period but only two lives were lost in road accidents.
Our correspondent Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia says a 48-year-old man is believed to have fallen asleep behind the wheel and crashed, and an 89-year-old woman was killed by a car that went off the road and hit her.
He says police kept a close watch on the roads during the period.
"They've been there 24 hours a day just to monitor all these drivers who're under the influence, to make sure that drivers with a legal driver's license are driving vehicles instead of unlicensed people driving vehicles, which cause accidents."
