Tourism Fiji expects the new flight service offered by Continental Micronesia between Fiji and Honolulu will boost Japanese and U.S. visitor numbers to Fiji in 2010.

Scheduled flights now operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays from Nadi to Honolulu and Wednesdays and Sundays from Nadi to Guam.

Patrick Wong says it's exciting and will provide key benefits to tourism and opens up more visitors from other parts of the world,.

"So it's opened up avenues for us in terms of stimulating the Japanese market, trying to encourage more investment out of that area for outbound traffic into Fiji. So we're pretty much optimistic. At the same time, there's connectivity as well out of mainland U.S. via Honolulu into Fiji."

Continental Airline's managing director Matt Miller said in a statement they are pleased to include Nadi in their network.
