Solomon's Commission of Inquiry into land dealings starts next month

One of the Solomon Islands government's key policy goals towards reconciliation will start next month with the start of the Commission of Inquiry into the land dealings on Guadalcanal.

The Prime Minister, Dr Derek Sikua, told National Parliament the Commission of Inquiry will be chaired by members from neighbouring Melanesian countries, and will be headed by Bryan Brunton from Papua New Guinea.

The Inquiry is expected to raise again the ethnic divisions as many of those displaced on Guadalcanal were Malaitans, who still claim legal ownership over the lands they left behind.

The issue of land was one of the major contributing factors to the ethnic crisis in 2000.
