Guam public school system head fired

7:38 am on 28 March 2008

The Guam Education Superintendent, Luis Reyes, has been fired by the territory's education board.

KUAM TV reports that Mr Reyes has been under increasing pressure following the closure two weeks ago of Southern High School for widespread health and safety violations.

The school was reopened on Wednesday night after the education board's Health and Safety Task Force conducted an inspection of the campus.

The chairman of the Education Board, Joe San Agustin, says that the Southern High School debacle only aggravated the board's concerns about Mr Reyes' leadership of the public school system.

Mr Reyes' contract was terminated, effective immediately.
