The Supreme Court in Samoa has given a four-and-a-half-year jail sentence to a 29-year-old man who pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of a member of parliament.

Va'ai Solia Papu Va'ai was wounded after the man fired a shot at him during a council meeting in Falealupo village on Savaii Island.

The incident occurred in March last year.

The court decision takes into account a traditional Ifoga made by the gunman's village and family but the Chief Justice, Patu Falefatu Sapolu, says the seriousness of the offence commands a custodial sentence.

His time in police custody will be deducted from the jail term.
