Bill to save Hawaii Superferry moves slowly through State Legislature

A bill to save the inter-island Hawaii Superferry is slowly moving through the state Legislature, but senators are concerned that there are not enough environmental safeguards included in the measure.

The Honolulu Star bulletin reports a nine-hour Senate hearing in Hawaii yesterday ended with no decision.

The controversy over the 85 million US dollar superferry is due to an environmental assessment not being carried out by the state, in 2005.

The ferry service, which began operating in August, was suspended shortly afterwards when environmentalists staged a major protest, and the matter went to court.
