French Polynesia's assembly is now set to be convened the day after tomorrow for a no confidence motion deposited by the opposition at the weekend.
The Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party is reported to back a call for an extraordinary sitting which could bring down the Gaston Tong Sang-led government formed eight months ago.
The party has reportedly told its assembly members that they can vote as they wish.
The president of the assembly is to make a decision later today.
The opposition Union For Democarcy claims to have the support of at least 27 of the 57 assembly members while Mr Tong Sang is said to only have 11 members behind him.
The challenge to the government comes as French Polynesia is to host the French minister in charge of overseas territories to discuss plans to stabilise the local political scene.
