The result of a World Health Organisation survey released this month has been questioned by health authorities and people in Niue.

The Step Survey which WHO is reported to have carried out randomly in some Pacific countries and shows that more than 90 percent of people in Niue, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia are overweight.

However, a registered nurse and nutritionist in Niue, Grizelda Mokoia, says the public doe not believe the figures are right.

"Because we were not sure where the actual report came from, where they got the figures from, we knew it was the Forbes report, but we didn't know whether it was the Niueans here in Niue or the Niueans in New Zealand, they did tell us that in regards to the Niueans in New Zealand in general."

Grizelda Mokoia says there's no denying that there is an obesity problem in Niue.

She says they are working with the community on a variety of programmes.
