French Polynesian party leader Flosse lashes out at autonomy platform colleagues

3:37 pm on 10 May 2007

The leader of French Polynesia's Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party says it is surrounded by traitors.

Gaston Flosse made the comment after an analysis of last weekend's presidential election results showed that outer islands with Tahoeraa assembly representatives had voted for the Socialist candidate and election loser, Segolene Royal.

Mr Flosse had expected overwhelming backing for Nicolas Sarkozy but the final results gave him just a slim majority.

He has accused some assembly members who belong to the so-called pro-autonomy platform of have supported the rival Ms Royal.

The claim comes amid new dissent with the party over who should be the candidates for next month's election of a new French assembly.
