Nailatikau nominated for Fiji vice president's position

2:10 pm on 11 April 2007

Fiji's president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, has nominated the interim foreign minister, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, as the country's new vice president.

Radio Legend reports that this has been confirmed by sources within the meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs now under way in Suva.

The sources say the chairman of the Great Council, Ratu Ovini Bokini, announced President's Iloilo's choice soon after mid day.

The chiefs will now discuss Ratu Epeli's nomination in their three confederacies before deciding whether they will endorse his name.

The appointment comes after Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi resigned in December when the military staged a coup and the military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, purported to be the new president.

Commodore Bainimarama did so for a month after which he became the new interim prime minister.
