Action to be taken in Fiji once audit of Native Lands Trust Board completed

The board of the Vanua Development Corporation in Fiji is presenting a number of options to the interim administration over its future.

The VDC is the recently established commercial arm of the Native Lands Trust Board which itself is facing an audit over allegations of mismanagement, misuse of resources and the failure of its new 10 million U.S. dollar I.T. system.

It had been reported that the VDC would be scrapped but the interim minister for Fijian Affairs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, says this won't necessarily happen.

Ratu Epeli says the VDC board has put forward some ideas.

"They have put up some options, and one of those options is to hive off this activity somewhere else so hopefully, you know, we can accommodate what they are trying to do which I think is quite viable, in my view, but not to have it attached to the NLTB but they can take it somewhere else."

Ratu Epeli says he's also hopeful the audit will come up with some recommendations on how they can improve the NLTB's functions in order to satisfy the landowners.
