Fiji AG says police probe of military not linked to politics

Fiji's Attorney General says the ongoing police investigation into the head of the military is not politically motivated.

Qoriniasi Bale made the comment after Commodore Frank Bainimarama reportedly sent a letter to the Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, making six demands.

They include the dropping of all police investigations into him, the removal of the police commissioner, and the dumping of cabinet ministers charged with coup-related offences.

Mr Bale says he believes many people in Fiji endorse the police investigation and see it as a step towards resolving the impasse between the government and the military.

"I don't think it's political, it is very legal there, and the majority of people in Fiji I'm sure would agree that no-one is above the law. You cannot ask the police not to investigate you for any allegation that warrants investigation."

Mr Bale says the commander can't demand the removal of the police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, because he's well outside their area of responsibility.
