Fiji mineworkers to vote on industrial action

9:36 am on 22 August 2006

Fiji's Mine Workers Union is due to conduct a secret ballot to decide whether to take industrial action.

The union has expressed frustration with the Vatukoula Gold Mine's decision to lay off 120 workers, even though the case is before the Arbitration Tribunal.

Union representative, Satish Chandra, has told the Fijilive news website that a redundancy package needs to be discussed.

The mine's management says they have exhausted government funds to assist the workers, which is why they had to send them home.
