The Marshall Islands and the United States governments have agreed to revised environmental oversight regulations that govern US activities at the Army-operated missile testing range at Kwajalein Atoll.
The approval followed a briefing to the Cabinet earlier this week on the revisions, introduced by US Ambassador Greta Morris and presented by the project team co-chairs, Randy Gallien of the US Army and John McCarroll of the US Environmental Protection Agency.
Ambassador Morris said the revised environmental standards were the product of a 16-year-long team effort by the US and the Marshall Islands Environmental Protection Authority to forge a consensus document.
The document details environmental oversight of US activities at the missile range, which is the hub for American anti-missile defence experiments.
The review was a requirement of a recently concluded Compact of Free Association between the U.S. and the Marshall Islands.
Each year since 1995, the environmental project team has met to update the document and then brief the U.S. and Marshall Islands governments.
